Women of 1819 Stories

The inspiration for this Forgotten Women Friday came from Peter Burnhill's project to investigate 'Victoria's Common Cohort', in other words, ordinary people, both male and female, born in the same year as Queen Victoria, 1819. You can listen to Peter talking about this project here.

These stories focus on women born* in 1819 from Wem in Shropshire and Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. You can read the background to this Forgotten Women Friday here. We are also adding stories of women born elsewhere in that year.

* It is difficult to ascertain precise birthdates at this point, so we are accepting those baptised in 1819 and January 1820, in lieu of an exact birthdate, unless records suggest that they were born earlier.
