History is filled with women. They shaped families and communities, worked, cared, struggled and survived, yet all too often their individual stories were never preserved. Our new book sets out to change that.
Once Hidden, Now Heard: Remembering Women’s Lives explores the experiences of women who have slipped from view. Some survive in the records as little more than a name in a parish register, a mark on a marriage certificate, a line on a census return, or simply as someone’s wife, daughter, widow or mother. Through careful research, the book looks beyond those fragments to ask who these women really were, the challenges they faced and the societies that shaped their choices. Their stories encompass childbirth and motherhood, education, reputation, work and industry, childhood and wartime life, revealing women from different backgrounds, periods and places.
At its heart is the belief that every woman’s story matters. These women may not have changed governments, made headlines or achieved fame, but their lives mattered to their families, their communities and the generations that followed.
Once Hidden, Now Heard invites readers to look differently at women in the historical record and perhaps to begin searching for a few forgotten women of their own.
